Is Tangalle in Sri Lanka the perfect destination for sun, sea and sand?
I’ve always dreamt of sinking my feet into a sandy beach thousands of miles away from home. Somewhere remote (but comfortable), tropical (without too many creepy crawlies) and hot (but not unbearably so).
Tangalle on Sri Lanka’s south coast seemed a perfect fit. We stayed at the Anatara Peace Haven Resort in April 2017 for just over a week. This luxury hotel is off the beaten track… so if you’re flying into Colombo, Sri Lanka’s main airport, be prepared for a long drive.
The hotel
Anantara Peace Haven opened its doors in 2015, so it’s fairly new. There are 152 rooms, which include beautiful cottages, spread across a 21-acre coconut plantation. Every guest receives a traditional welcome. We were treated to a chorus of singing as we entered the reception – a sweet and personal touch.

The location
Make no mistake the balcony views are breathe taking. The hotel is surrounded by coconut trees and overlooks the Indian Ocean. It’s easy to lose yourself in the different shades of blue that stretch out for miles in front of the resort. Don’t be surprised if you spot a monkey or a peacock wondering around the grounds of the hotel – all very tame, but definitely not something I expected. The luscious green gardens are beautifully maintained and the infinity pool, with sun loungers submerged in water, are perfect for getting lost in a book whilst cooling down. Take us back now!
The beach
The only down side for me was the beach. I know, I know… this is Sri Lanka, where most beaches look like they should be on the front of a post card. Yep, the golden sand stretches out for miles but the coastline directly in front of the Anantara Peace Haven Resort is often too rough to swim in, which was really disappointing. Leah and I prefer to cool down in the sea rather than the pool so most of the time we took a short walk to one of the neighbouring beaches which seemed calmer, (only slightly) but busier.
The crowd
Perfect for couples looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway. And yes, even though Leah and I like to take a selfie or three... there seemed to be quite a few of those professional Instagram couples taking pictures of themselves...as if it were a sport.
